Saeko's guide to berries. (WIP)

Note: any and all English names given are for OOC reference. Assume Saeko's written this all in her native language, which is anomalous to Japanese. All the info given here holds true to her world only.

------
Don't ask me how they can grow from a full fruit planted in the ground in days, while seeds take months. Once harvested, the fruit grows back in twice as many days as it would take to grow from a planted fruit.

All pokemon eat berry-fruits, even obligate carnivores. Some of them will cure pokemon of various ailments caused by Attacks, though they will not cure humans, supporting the idea that berries evolved for pokemon. Any benefits humans get are incidental, and usually require work to get.

Outside of that, they have a lot of uses, from producing dyes to uses in cooking (if you ever get the chance, try nanab tart or spaghetti with berry medley sauce), to making all kinds of drinks. Any good juicer should be able to make them into juice.

Caring for them is easy; water and weed and nothing else; once fully grown, they should keep making fruit for anywhere from five years to, I've heard, one hundred years if the plants are cared for. The firmness is basically how gentle one should be when handling the berry-fruit itself. Also, I don't think they should be grown outside of a greenhouse here? I don't know what effects they'd have on the native creatures here and I'm not that keen to find out.

(Next to each entry is a basic hand drawn picture of the berry-fruit, and what looks like it could be the bush or tree it comes from. )
Burī; Bluk
Size: 10.8 cm (length wise)
Firmness: Soft
Growth: 4 days from full fruit; 8 months from seed
Flavor: Sweet with a touch of dryness, it can also be used to offset the spiciness of other berries.
Yield: 4-12, dependant on care given.
Notes: This'll temporarily dye the mouth black when eaten. Also used in the production of black dye for leather, and all kinds of cooking and I've heard that it can make a kind of berry wine??? Or be used in the making of Shuckie Berry Juice (which is Unovan, I think?)
Nana; Nanab
Size: 7.7 cm (width wise)
Firmness: Very hard
Growth: 4 days from full fruit; 8 months from seed
Flavor: Bitter with a touch of sweet, it can also be used to offset the dryness of other berries.
Yield: 2-10, dependant on care given.
Notes: Said to be the seventh berry-fruit dometicated in the world. Smoothies made with this are the best.
Seshina; Wepear
Size: 7.4 cm (length wise)
Firmness: Super hard
Growth: 4 days from full fruit; 8 months from seed
Flavor: A delicate balance of bitter and sour, it can also be used to offset some sweetness of other berries.
Yield: 2-10, dependant on care given.
Notes: It seems to promote digestion and many people use them in all kinds of cooking. Mum says that in parts of the Johto mountains, there's festivals held every year. She also says that monks can make a special kind of beer with it.
Pairu; Pinap
Size: 8.0 cm (length wise)
Firmness: Hard
Growth: 4 days from full fruit; I don't know how long it takes from a seed
Flavor: A spicy berry with a touch of sourness, it can also be used to offset the bitterness of other berries.
Yield: 4-12, dependant on care given. Then most I've ever gotten is like, 7.
Notes: Best grown indoors. It doesn't like wind or the cold.
Spicy fruit and sour skin, both are used to make a popular juice. There are these shots made with only the skin, and being able to drink eight shots in a row is said to bring good luck.

Kurabo; Cheri
Size: 2.0 cm (not including stem)
Firmness: Soft
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; maybe 12 months from seed?
Flavor: Rather spicy, it can also be used to offset the sourness of other berries.
Yield: 4-12, dependant on care given.
Notes: A natural remedy for Paralysed pokemon, it's also said to be nice roasted and served with shellfish. Can also be made into a drink, and used in all kinds of cooking.
Kago; Chesto
Size: 8.0 cm (length)
Firmness: Super hard
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 12? months from a seed
Flavor: Rather dry, it can also be used to offset the spiciness of other berries.
Yield: 4-12, dependant on care given.
Notes: It can be used to awaken Sleeping pokemon. Every bit of it can be eaten, so people like to use it in cooking. I've had it in juices, but it doesn't taste that good.
Momon; Pecha
Size: 4.0 cm (length)
Firmness: Very soft
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; I don't think it has seeds?
Flavor: Nice and sweet, it can also be used to offset the dryness of other berries.
Yield: 4-12, dependant on care given.
Notes: A natural overall antidote to Poison and way better than antidotes to the point I'd sooner use these than them. It can be used to soothe stings and bites on humans but it won't cure any poisoning from them. It bruises really easy, making it hard to harvest. There's also a hollow pocket inside for some reason?? Like, where are the seeds?
Chīgo; Rawst
Size: 3.2 cm (length)
Firmness: Hard
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 12 months from seed
Flavor: Bitter! But it can also be used to offset the sweetness of other berries, so there's that I guess.
Yield: 2-12, dependant on care given.
Notes: Long and curly leaves mean it'll be super bitter. Crushing the berries into a paste is a good way to soothe burns on humans, and feeding one to a Burned pokemon seems to heal them. I'm sure it can be used for other things as well.
Nanashi; Aspear
Size: 5.0 cm (circ.)
Firmness: Super hard
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 12 ? months from seed
Flavor: Kinda sour, it can also be used to offset the bitterness of other berries.
Yield: 4-12, dependant on care given.
Notes: I'll never know how it can hold so much juice. Either way, they're good for all kinds of things, from cooking to juices, to easing frostbite, to unthawing a Frozen pokemon.
Oran; Oran
Size: 3.5 cm (width)
Firmness: Super hard
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 16 months from seed
Flavor: A mix of flavors, none stand out.
Yield: 4-15, dependant on care given.
Notes: When a pokemon eats this, they get a bit of health back. These berry-fruits are great all-rounders, and a lot of people believe eating three a day along with an apple keeps the doctor away. They can be made into just about anything; I like them in salads.
Zaroku; Pomeg
Size: 13.5 cm (width circ.)
Firmness: Very hard and thick skin.
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 32 months from seed
Flavor: It's spicy and bitter with a touch of sweetness, it can also be used to offset dry and sour flavours of other berries.
Yield: 2-6, dependant on care given.
Notes: Be careful when peeling the thick skin, as the fruit inside's already in pieces. It's probably one of the most useful berries as it makes for great rewards or treats for pokemon who like the flavour/s. There seems to be another use, but I'm not sure of it. Otherwise, it's also used in cooking, and makes decent ice cream.
Nekobu; Kelpsy
Size: 38.1 cm (length circ.)
Firmness: Hard
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 32 months from seed
Flavor: A rather dry and sour berry and the touch of bitterness doesn't help. It's used mainly to offset any spicy or sweet berry-fruits.
Yield: 2-6, dependant on care given.
Notes: This is a rare one and I don't think it's native to Hoenn, as it doesn't seem to like lot of the soil. It can be eaten as it is, or boiled for a flavor extract. Pokemon seem to like eating it, and there seems to be another use, but I'm not sure of it.
Taporu; Qualot
Size: 11.0 cm (length)
Firmness: Hard
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 32 months from seed
Flavor: It's rather spicy and sweet, with a touch of sourness; it can also be used to offset the dryness and or bitterness of other berries.
Yield: 1-20, dependant on care given.
Notes: Even with constant rain and high humidity, it grows healthy and strong. Loves water. Like, I don't even think it's possible to drown this plant. Grandma said that in the olden days, 'Taporuko' was used as a nickname for sickly people in the hopes they'd be like the plant and survive anything.
Rome; Hondew
Size: 16.2 cm (length)
Firmness: Hard
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 32 months from seed
Flavor: A really dry and bitter berry with a touch of spiciness. It's useful in offsetting the sweetness and or sourness of other berries.
Yield: 2, dependant on care given.
Notes: I think this is the largest berry in the world. It's also really rare an pretty valuable. It's said to be delicious, but I don't like the flavour. It's a favoured gift item for some reason. I think to show off wealth, as these things are expensive.
Ubu; Grepa
Size: 14.9 cm (circ.)
Firmness: Soft
Growth: 12 days from full fruit; 32 months from seed
Flavor: A sweet and sour berry with a touch of dryness, it can also be used to offset the bitterness and or spiciness of other berries.
Yield: 1-5, dependant on care given.
Notes: It can be used for lots of things, but I don't really remember what outside of making juice with it.
